01

Write the measurement questions

Start with questions such as which landing pages produce qualified actions or where a task fails. Convert each question into a small set of events and properties. Do not collect fields merely because the tag manager makes them available.

02

Classify data and consent

Separate essential operational data from analytics and advertising data. Document whether identifiers, URLs, form values, or location data may contain personal information. Configure consent behavior for the jurisdictions and services you use, and keep the public privacy notice aligned with reality.

03

Create an event contract

For every event, define trigger, required fields, allowed values, owner, retention, and test case. Stable names make reporting trustworthy. Never send passwords, free-form message bodies, payment details, or sensitive form values.

  • Business question named
  • Event owner assigned
  • Personal data reviewed
  • Consent behavior tested
04

Monitor the instrumentation

Validate events before release and after major template changes. Alert on sudden drops, spikes, duplicate firing, and missing required properties. Analytics is software: it needs versioning, tests, and ownership rather than a one-time installation.
